Books 2022-2024:

Touba Family Foundation Grants:

Stewards of the Water, published in the spring of 2022,

details over 150 years of environmental activism on Lake

George. The book brings together the stories of many lake

stewards such as Stoddard and Apperson. Many of the

other stewards are not widely known. Seneca Ray

Stoddard is best known for his photography which he used

to promote the concept of “Forever Wild” which is

enshrined in the NYS Constitution. John Apperson

prevented NYC Robert Moses from building a highway

along Tongue Mountain and he preserved Dome Island by

purchasing it for the State.

The women of the Loines Family amassed 2,400 acres

including two miles of shoreline in Northwest Bay

whichthey put under the protection of the Lake George

Land Conservancy. DEC Ranger Frank Leonbruno

preserved many of Lake George’s islands. George Burdick,

DEC aquatic biologist, proved that DDT was responsible for

the fish kills and the failure of lake trout to reproduce. The

book is a collective effort of a number of Lake authors.

Tom Ryan created the beautiful water colors featured in

each chapter.

Climate Change in the Land of Magic, is a graphic novel

interpreted by children describing the various changes in

 Lake George.

What is the land of magic?

What is the land of magic? It’s the memory in the grandparents’

hearts of a more idyllic climate past. It’s the invention of the

future, the solutions and concerns, in a child’s imagination,

articulating what can still be saved or how we adapt. It’s our

Adirondacks, the lakes and towns, threatened by too much

warming. We need to name and face the threats and then figure

out next steps. Through the reimagining in these cartoons, our

youth give us new perspectives and challenge their elders to take

action on behalf of the generations to come.
