Dunhams Bay Association/North Queensbury Wastewater District #1
The Dunhams Bay Association became concerned about water quality in 2011 when its members viewed underwater pictures of algal blooms off more than 50% of properties in Dunhams Bay. Algal testing indicated the presence of organic pollution. The Association reviewed the Town of Queensbury records of septic systems and found 79% of the 71 properties had little or no septic systems information. Thirty six septic systems around Dunhams Bay have been upgraded since 2014. The former Fund for Lake George provided $150,000 for upgrades.
In December 2014 Dunhams Bay officially became the North Queensbury Wastewater District No. 1. Thus, it is a Town entity. The District Advisory Board is appointed by a Town resolution each year. Alan Wrigley is the Chair of the Board in 2025.
The creation of a Wastewater District qualified property owners for state, federal and not-for-profit funding to upgrade septic systems. The District opted out of the Park Commission septic inspection program and has a similar program that inspects about 12 systems per year so that all systems will have been inspected within a five year period. The District reimburses the cost of septic inspections which are handled by the Town or in the case of ETU’s by the manufacturer’s representative. The District inspection program initially focused on those systems for which the Town had no records so that now the systems remaining to be inspected are probably compliant.
